What is TMD/TMJ?

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) involves the muscles for chewing and temporomandibular joint(s) (TMJ). TMD is a problem that comes from the joint and muscles of the body, affecting up to 25% of the general population.  Many patients respond well to a conservative treatment approach.

Common Symptoms of TMD

  • jaw pain with chewing, talking and yawning
  • clicking with jaw movement
  • intermittent locking on opening or closing
  • limited mouth opening that can be mild, moderate or severe
  • ear symptoms (ear pain, fullness and tinnitus)
  • headache (in the temple area)

During the initial evaluation, your physio will find out the source of your pain. They will then recommend what type of treatment options you have to meet your goals. You can expect open communication between your physiotherapist and your dentist, surgeon and/or doctor.

TMD symptoms share similar symptoms with other common problems that may need input from other healthcare professionals.  After your assessment, your physiotherapist will determine if this may be required.   Patients could see an ophthalmologist (oculofacial pain), dentist (otalgia), ENT (sinusitis and allergies) and/or neurologist (migraine).
